A trail blazed by two Talkeetna men will be formally dedicated on Sept. 2 at 3 p.m.
Talkeetna Lakes Park is the Borough's newest recreational facility. The dedication
includes a three-mile hike around X Lake at 1 p.m.
The park, which is two miles south of Talkeetna, has 1,040-acres and includes six lakes.
It took eight years to create and has been the work site of Upper Susitna Water and Soil
Conservation District Youth Conservation Corps crews.
The new trail allows for hiking, snow shoeing, mountain biking, and canoeing and fishing
on nearby waters. Free use of canoes will be part of the dedication event.
But there's more. The Borough will eventually develop "a world class trail system for
Nordic skiing," according to Borough Spokesperson Patty Sullivan's news release.
"In 2006, a trail crew with the International Mountain Biking Association visited the park
and tuned up the trail designed by Chris Mannix and Karl Swanson of the Denali Nordic
Ski Club," Sullivan wrote.
"It's a much needed and well-used cool trail in a beautiful park," Mannix was quoted as
saying in the Borough release. "It was a lot of work. We naively thought it would be easy
to build a hiking loop."
Mannix and Swanson, "put their heart and soul into it," said Pat Owens, Land
Management Specialist with the Mat-Su Community Development Dept. "A lot of work
in this park was done by the community. That's what's unique about this project. The
community is leading the way. It's a nice cooperation," Owens said in the same release.
