Trapper Creek Responds to Talkeetna Elementary Crisis
Letter from Trapper Creek PTA to School District
Superintendent, George Troxel
501 N. Gulkana Palmer, AK 99645
Mr. Troxel and Administration Staff~
We, as the Trapper Creek PTA Board, would like to request a proposal that addresses a teaching
principal at Trapper Creek Elementary, while maintaining current staff at status quo. Sandy
Shoulders, itinerant librarian, and Karen Mannix, P.E. teacher, have offered to give up their itinerant
positions at Trapper Creek to accommodate eliminating a shared principal with Talkeetna. In lieu of
Jodi Picou's recent resignation, we would appreciate consideration of this proposal.
In addition, the Trapper Creek PTA Board Members unanimously request Jodi Picou as our teaching
principal, if she is willing to accept this position, and the proposal is agreed to by MSBSD Board
Members and District Administration.
We believe Trapper Creek Elementary deserves a teaching principal position that will provide
leadership consistency and availability in consideration of the newly proposed curriculum and daily
needs of an educational environment.
Thank you for considering the needs of Trapper Creek Elementary and Trapper Creek PTA's
proposal.
Respectively,
Duronda Twigg, TC PTA President
Brandy McCormick, TC PTA V. P.
Jennifer Stankowitz, TC PTA Secretary
Sariah Naff, TC PTA Treasurer
Save This Historic House
Dear Editor,
This is written to express the Talkeetna Historical Society’s concern about the deterioration and
neglect of the Weatherell-Taraski-Rust building (the picture of which appears on page 13 of the
September issue of the Pioneer Press). This structure
(listed as one of the 10 most endangered buildings in Alaska by the AKASSOC for historic
preservation) is essential to our listing on the National Registry of Historic Places, and to the
preservation of our past.
We seek everyone’s advice and ideas on how to maintain and preserve the Weatherell Cabin before
it, too, becomes just a memory.
Sincerely,
Michael Kelly,
Director
