• Art Showing
March Art Exhibit and Opening Reception
Stop by Flying Squirrel Bakery Café from
March 13 through early April to see an
exhibit of Robin Song’s incredible
photographs of animals and nature
including insects, waterfowl, moose,
eagles, mountains, wildflowers, horses
and more. Visit with Robin during the
reception on Saturday, March 13 from
3 p.m.-6 p.m., when she will have a
continuous slide show of her work, and
note cards, unframed and framed photos
of various sizes available for sale. Light
refreshments will be provided. THAT'S
THIS SATURDAY! Let us know if you or
someone you know would like to exhibit
work on the walls of Flying Squirrel. This
is a great opportunity for artists,
photographers and crafters to gain
exposure, exhibit work professionally in a
beautiful space and sell work at a low
commission. There are still a few months
of 2010 that are open. Please contact me
for more information.
Reasons NOT to Drive
to Flying Squirrel!
There are MANY reasons to avoid driving
whenever possible. Usually it means you
are getting outside, walking, riding a bike,
pushing a baby stroller, skiing, dog
mushing, snow shoeing or maybe even
roller skating! Just outside the door of
Flying Squirrel there is a separated bike
path along the Talkeetna Spur and a great
system of hiking and skiing trails.
PLEASE USE THEM!!! It's good for you
and good for the world. Mention that you
arrived at Flying Squirrel by non-
motorized means and we will give you a
small discount on your total purchases in
honor of friend, bicycle advocate, and
long-time Talkeetna
sourdough Mike Fisher...
*  *  *  *
This month we're adding yet another great
way to stay out of your car! We support
Talkeetna's public transportation effort,
Sunshine Transit. If you come to Flying
Squirrel by non-motorized means, we'll
give you the Mike Fisher discount AND A
FREE RIDE HOME on the transit van
anytime during the regular van schedule -
don't forget, the van can take bikes too!
And, since the transit van is in need of
paid ridership of any kind, here's a great
experiment we challenge you to try out:
give your lunch a ride on the van! Call up
Flying Squirrel during regular van hours,
order and pay for your food by phone and
we'll package it up, tack on $2 for the van
ride, and call the shuttle - they'll deliver the
order to your door! The fine print: this
service is only available during Flying
Squirrel regular business hours AND
Sunshine Transit regular van schedule
AND only includes deliveries to Talkeetna,
East Talkeetna, the entire length of the
Talkeetna Spur and within 1/2 mile off of
the Talkeetna Spur. If this works, maybe
we'll try pizza delivery next month! By the
way, Sunshine Transit van ride tickets are
now available at Flying Squirrel. Just ask
at the front counter.

Wood Fired Pizza is Now Available
Thursday & Saturday Evenings!
The wood fired oven is a dream. For more
details on what it's like to bake in it, read
my blog entry from a few weeks ago.
Bread is moist inside and crisp and
crunchy outside. The oven stays hot for
days. We can used the residual heat to
roast mushrooms, garlic, red peppers and
chickens or to bake muffins and cookies.
Vinnie has really gotten the hang of
slinging those pizza pies onto the hearth
and is learning the best methods and
timing for raking the coals around the
oven to keep the hearth hot and the pizza
crusts crisp. I must say, it's pretty darned
yummy pizza! The pizza menu changes
weekly and can be viewed on our website;
we have green salads on those nights, we
can do pizzas for take-out or eat-in; and
come check out our fine and fun selection
of beer and wine. By the way, Pizza Night
will NOT be held on Saturday, February
27 - we hope that most of you will be
headed over to the fund raiser dinner for
Murray Nash starting at 5 p.m. We will be
open regular hours that day 7:30 a.m.-
7 p.m. Click here for the
Pizza Menu!

Marching Forward
Every year March seems like the most
hopeful month with longer days, more
sun, and still great conditions for getting
outside. Brian and Oliver have been
working on the trails and I finally got to
test them out a few times lately. Out the
back door of Flying Squirrel is a very nice
groomed trail that connects to Tigger
Lake, Teacher's Pond and beyond - all are
welcome to give it a spin! This year,
March will bring a photography show by
Robin Song with the opening on March
13. We are also planning a special
Passover Seder and dinner on March 30.
More details on these events next month.

Talkeetna Roadhouse
EVENTS
Tuesdays, all winter! 6 - 9 p.m.: here at the Roadhouse:
Stitch-n-B%#%!.   Well, we used to call it that about a decade ago then it
became Knit-Wits.  For lack of a new name (Hookers United!) I figured
we'd just go back to calling the kettle black.  Ha!  There have been
crochet projects lately and I will be working more on some hooked rugs
when the holidays are over.  Whatever your handiwork, or gender, you
are welcome to drop on in with your project and something to B$#&@
about!  (just making sure you're reading all the way down to the bottom
of this thing!)
Talkeetna Roadhouse News
Heads up! (or down...)  Beginning on Monday we will be replacing the
floor in the bakery section of the building and anticipate a three day job.
The beauty of working with these old buildings is that you NEVER quite
know what you're getting into until you are knee deep in it.  We'll remain
open during the work,  just be prepared for some free entertainment if
you come in after the weekend.  (We'll try to keep the swearing down to
a minimum!)
And speaking of keeping our language clean, are you  a local kid? The
Roadhouse is a great place to come and work on homework or other
school projects. Doors open at 8am each day and our big tables are just
the right size for spreading out papers.  We have Wi-Fi and now a
yummy After School Special:  Rudy-in-a-Parka, small milk and one small
cookie, all for $5.
Feeling a little grimy? Are your dirty clothes piling up in a corner of
your cabin?  Have you gotten smelly and lonely and are losing sleep over
the whole mess?  We are now offering a Get Clean! package:  20% off a
private room stay, coins and soap for a load of laundry and all the long,
hot showers that you can stand during your stay.  This package available
weekdays throughout the winter and subject to availability.
Oh, the peaceful days of Winter!  If your group is looking for a spot
to meet just give us a call.  We are here weekday mornings starting at
8am and can offer a very quiet, distraction free location for your
gathering.
Wednesdays, all winter! 6 - 9pm here at the Roadhouse: Musical
Wednesdays.  All those music classes at the Hangar on Wednesdays
made that evening a perfect fit for a handful of local characters to gather
in the back room for some music "fellowship".  All are welcome,
whatever your instrument or style.  You can even just sit back and hum.
Or clap.  Or just soak it all in!
Hassle-Free Weekend...All Winter Long & Now Pie Making Too!
Leave the driving to the Alaska Railroad! The Railroad comes up from
Anchorage on Saturday & returns on Sunday all winter long.  The
Roadhouse is a one block walk/ski from the Downtown Winter Depot.
The  Hurricane Turn runs Northbound the first Thursday of the month,
departing Anchorage at 8:30am and Talkeetna at 11:35am. It returns to
Talkeetna that afternoon at 3:40pm and gets back into Anchorage at 7pm.
Have you ever wanted to be known as a GREAT pie maker?  Come on
up and I'll teach you everything I know...really!  The package includes
roundtrip train tickets from Anchorage to Talkeetna (up on Saturday,
down on Sunday), the Saturday afternoon pie dough and pie making
lesson, breakfast the next morning and your very own pie to take home
with you on the train.  For all the Railroad details: alaskarailroad.com

DENALI ARTS COUNCIL
(Click  to go straight to their hot new Web site!)

Visual Arts at the Hangar: Jon Mann exhibits “Art from the Front
Porch” & photos by Laura Wright, “Talking About Talkeetna”
When: Saturday, March 13 4-7pm art opening & reception.
Work will be on display until early April.
Cost: Free
Local artist and resident Jon Mann presents "Art from the Front Porch",
a collection of drawings, prints and paintings at the North Wall Gallery.
Jon moved to Talkeetna in 2000 after living in the Denali Park area,
where he became a resident in ‘95. Jon is a graduate of the Kansas City
Art Institute. This is Jon's third show at the Sheldon Hangar and he
hopes you enjoy it! “Talking About Talkeetna - images from a blog page
about life in the north” is a photo exhibit by Laura Wright. Laura has
always loved documentary photography so when Karey Larson, owner
of Talkeetna Travel and a photo contributor in the project, asked her to
start a blog page with a ‘picture of the day’ about Talkeetna and Alaska,
she thought that this would be her chance to get back into photography.
All she needed was an assignment. One year and 365 pictures later and
here are some of the favorite images of our town and state. Hosted by
the Talkeetna Artists Guild.
