Willow July Fourth Event
Draws Hundreds
WILLOW -- Hundreds gathered at the Willow
Community Center to celebrate the Fourth in a typically
Alaskan style -- the parade included dog teams and even a
well-dressed goat and the festival that followed had a dog
costume contest as well as a dunk tank.
The Willow Area Community Council (WACO), the
Willow Lion's Club and the Willow Volunteer Fire
Department all joined to make the day filling as well as
festive. The Community potluck burger and hot dog meal
fed hundreds. Homemade potato salads, corn salads and
lots of brownies and other treats joined baked beans and
salads on the buffet tables.
Nobody went thirsty either, as volunteers hoisted big vats
of lemonade and fruit punch from the center's kitchen to
the covered eating area amid temps in the 80s.
WACO chair Linda Oxley thanked the local PTSA for
giving money to help pay a state permit needed this year
so the parade route could cross the highway. She said two
local residents who are certified road flaggers volunteered
their time to help the celebration meet state standards
without breaking the bank.
