Public Restrooms, Ball Field Top Priorities
Council Makes
Bed Tax Picks
By John R. Moses
Guaranteed cash for
public restroom
supplies at the Sheldon
Arts Hangar and a
new backstop for
Talkeetna's ballfield
are the Talkeetna Community Council's top two picks for Borough
Bed Tax grants. Cash for development of a community playground
came in third during an anonymous vote taken during the Council's
meeting Monday, Feb. 5, at Talkeetna Elementary School.
Each councilmember ranked 13 projects by personal preference and
sent them to a Borough subcommittee charged with recommending
which projects borough-wide will get a share of $340,000 set aside
for grants meant to offset the impacts of tourism. There are
$643,905 worth of grant requests, however.
Talkeetna's top pick was the last pick at the last Y Council meeting.
Members agreed that the Denali Arts Council deserved the grant to
help buy supplies like toilet paper, but chose to instead back a local
grant.
