SUDS is Closed
Until Jan. 5, 2010 we provided coin-operated laundry, showers and propane service on
Main Street  in
Beautiful Downtown Talkeetna. We were located behind Twister Creek
Restaurant and Denali Brewing Co. In late October the landlord informed us that he wanted
to convert the space into brewery space and use the showers for his workers, keeping a
couple laundry machines for his use. On Jan. 4 he told the community council that he does
not wish to provide these services anymore at this site.
I believe the restaurant should keep its word to the council and continue to provide these
services as part of their business -- as a public service -- the way previous owners of that
building have done for our community. Our experience proves that the profit margin is too
low to support an independent business at that site when rent is a factor. The three public
partners promised in 2008 to continue those services as a condition of the town council's
written support for yet another Downtown liquor license in an area already saturated with
bars (there are 7 other dispensaries in Talkeetna and one more on the way, not counting
the Arts Hangar). Twister Creek/Denali Brewing added TWO MORE dispensaries, the
brewery tasting room and the restaurant. Below is a list of what Talkeetna lost when a
laundry and shower facility that promoted public health and provided propane to local
residents was displaced to facilitate the brewery.
Private Shower Stall
& Clean Towels

Our Shower costs $4 and is set to
seven minutes.Towels are
available for $1 rental.

There's a shampoo bottle in the
shower stall.

Bar soap is available for
purchase.

Showers cost $4.
Bath and hand towels plus a wash
cloth are $1 extra.

One person per shower per token,
no exceptions.
Six Front-Loading Propane-Fired
Dryers

Figure a minimum of
$1.50 (.50 cents = 7 mins.)
per cycle to dry a moderate load of
clothes, more for a couple of
washer-loads. These dryers are
HOT but  can't perform miracles.

*
No drying of rubberized products
like waders, rugs or shoes. None of
us will be happy with the results.
Five Coin-Operated Washers

Loads cost $2.50 per.
Detergent is available on-site
at 50 cents per individual-load
baggie.

We hoped to have Washer #6
replaced but that didn't
happen.
