Press Release:
Jessica Stevens
Community
Foundation aims to
bolster local
community
Foundation to grow individual
giving; strengthen local
Infrastructure
April 21 – Leaders from the upper
Susitna Valley area joined forces with other
community leaders from throughout Alaska
this weekend to gain insight into building a
stronger nonprofit infrastructure and
increasing local philanthropy in the
Talkeetna, Caswell, Susitna Y and Trapper
Creek. The Jessica Stevens Community
Foundation (JSCF), supported by The
Alaska Community Foundation (ACF), will
be working with local residents to provide
leadership in setting community priorities
for charitable growth, and creating a
community endowment that insures support
of those priorities for years to come.
The Upper Susitna Valley communities
and six other Alaska regions are among the
first to participate in the Community Asset
Building Initiative, sponsored by the
Rasmuson Foundation. The Community
Asset Building Initiative will assist Alaska
communities in developing their own
community foundation through a structured
program of technical assistance, capacity
building and matching grants. Leaders in the
communities will form boards or advisory
committees to identify local priorities and
then create plans to develop the local
resources for long-term sustainability.
Communities participating in the initial
program, in addition to those in the Upper
Susitna Valley, include Homer, the
communities of the Kenai Peninsula,
Juneau, communities in the Frederick
Sound area (including Petersburg, Mitkof
and Kupreanof Islands), communities in the
Chilkat Valley (including Haines Borough
and village of Klukwan), and Seward.
Creating endowments in the local
communities goes hand in hand with
establishing local priorities. On April 19 and
April 20, leaders discovered the impact a
dollar given today in an endowment fund
can have on the community today,
tomorrow and in 50 years. “We are very
pleased Talkeetna, Caswell, the Susitna Y
and Trapper Creek are one of the first to
participate in this program and know the
community will benefit greatly from the
leadership offered by JSCV,” said ACF
President and Chief Executive Officer Carol
Simonetti.
Since 1996, the Alaska Community
Foundation has built successful partnerships
with donors and nonprofits to improve the
quality of life for Alaskans. ACF receives
gifts from thousands of generous
individuals and families, and last year,
awarded grants of more than $5 million to a
broad range of area nonprofit organizations.
ACF offers a range of charitable funds,
allowing donors to advance a cause,
support an individual organization, or
provide flexible support for community
needs.
